You can collect maple sap if you drill a hole into the bark of maple trees. But you have to know that the best species for producing syrup is the sugar maple. Moreover, you cannot just drill hole and collect sap anytime you want. There is a specific time and weather when the sap has the highest sugar content. If you were able to collect in that preferred time, you can be sure that your maple syrup or maple candy will taste yummy.

If you want to make maple syrup at home by collecting your own sap from your maple trees in your backyard, you have to be diligent and patient. You need to collect about 30 to 40 gallons of sap juts to produce one gallon of syrup. And you have to patiently cook the sap until you reach the syrup stage and all the water content has been boiled out.
